From the time she was in high school, Gloria Ireland, L.P.C.C. wanted to understand her inner feelings better and utilize her compassion for others to help them resolve their inner issues, also. After earning her degree in Psychology and Counseling, she worked in a variety of in-patient and out-patient mental health organizations. Gloria began her private practice as a Psychologist in the Akron/Cleveland area in 1988, and opened her Strongsville office in early 2002. We stopped by Pathfinders Counseling Services recently, and listened as Gloria introduced us to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and outlined the many services she provides;

Pathfinders Counseling Services offers individual and marital counseling, EMDR, and counseling and therapy for a wide variety of issues, including depression and anxiety. I also offer coaching for personal artistic performance enhancement to help artists master their stage performances, difficulties in motivation, and giving them the confidence needed to overcome the technical challenges they encounter in their performances. I offer individualized care and many years of experience that enables my clients to feel comfortable with me, know that their privacy is respected, and that they're seen as a person rather than as a number.

One of the unique therapies offered at Pathfinders Counseling Services is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. The major benefit of EMDR therapy is this research-proven technique helps resolve issues that have haunted you in the past so you no longer have to live with painful memories. By alternately stimulating the left and right hemisphere of the brain, the mind's internal processes will heal, erasing the pain caused by memories of the past. At the beginning of this therapy, you'll be asked to rate the disturbance caused by the troubling memory on a scale of zero to ten with zero being "no disturbance or neutral" and ten indicating the highest level of disturbance imaginable. Toward the end of the treatment, we'll check the Subjective Unit of Disturbance (SUD) again, and we find the level of disturbance has returned to zero. Patients still remember what's happened in their past, but they've moved on and it doesn't bother them any more.

EMDR is a wonderful technique, and as a therapist, it's a Godsend to be able to help people finally leave their pain behind. EMDR is a perfect treatment for all types of minor and major traumas. Often when people think of trauma they imagine something that was terribly upsetting, but minor traumas can be a simple as not being picked for the baseball team while growing up which make you feel like you don't quite measure up. Another example would be if your parents were divorced, you might feel abandoned by the parent you no longer lived with. Major traumas would include surviving a severe accident, having a serious illness and needing many operations, being a victim of rape or another violent act, or going through a natural disaster such as a hurricane or tornado. EMDR will help you understand your past troubles or pain, and enable you to move past them and not live with them anymore.
